Temporary Burial (2021) is a documentation of a performance of Sophie placing previously manipulated galvanised metal sheets into a site, with hopes of encouraging change within the materials by the elements of the location, in this case, soil.

 

The video consists of an overhead shot of Sophie burying the sheets, and repositioning them as she desires, submerging them in soil and grass. It is a shortened video of the documentation of Sophie transporting them from the pool of water in Sitting With Metal (2021) to Hampstead Heath, a new site.

The artist is exploring the mutual connection between human, materials and nature. Sophie views herself as a manipulative tool, one that is able to change the course of a material.

 

The connection between human bodies and materials is incredibly direct; they are both expressions of the earth which differ in appearance, whilst holding the power to manipulate each other’s outcome.
